Ian Rolf visits residential homes across the Isle of Wight to provide AV memory stimulation (also called Reminiscence Therapy). Showing imagery and moving footage helps individuals, particularly those with dementia, remember events, people and places from their past lives.

The retired businessman was using a second-hand Optoma projector that he was given five or six years ago.  This old low resolution model finally became dim and unusable this year.  He needed a bright replacement model that is lightweight and portable but with good image quality.

And as I have to carry the screen, laptop and projector on each visit, it was important this was as light as possible.”

Ian chose the HD27e Full HD 1080p HD27e all-round home entertainment projector, which combines high brightness with exceptional colour accuracy.

Despite weighing less than 2.5kg, the projector has a powerful 3,400 lumen brightness rating and can reproduce accurate Rec.709 HDTV broadcast specification colours.

Two HDMI inputs allow an easy set-up - perfect for connecting a laptop, PC, Blu-ray player, media streamer or games console. HDMI dongles like Google Chromecast™ or Amazon Fire TV can also be directly connected to the projector.

The HD27e has an integrated 10W speaker but is also equipped with an audio output for connection to external sound systems.

“The room was very light, with large windows, but the picture on the screen was incredibly clear.  I was astounded by the strength of the image.”

When asked what difference Ian felt this was this making to Alzheimer and dementia sufferers, he said: “I only see the residents for one hour a week, so I would not necessarily see the full impact of my visits.  But care home staff have commented that this does make a real positive impact.

“Showing pictures and playing music stimulates people and triggers memories.  One care home had a lady who rarely spoke a word.  Following our session, she was talking animatedly about old boyfriends.  I do sometimes throw in the same content to see if they remember seeing it before.  It makes me happy if they pull me up on it.

“The main thing for me is that they have a lovely time and enjoy the session.”

The residential homes book sessions with Ian who does between 10-12 visits a month, mostly in and around the Cowes, South Wight area.
